CONFIRMATION

CLASSES BEGIN SEPTEMBER 21, 2025

At Red Hill, confirmation is a church rite that follows two years of instruction in God’s Word and Lutheran doctrine. The Rite of Confirmation occurs at the end of these two years. It is designed to help baptized children of God grow in their faith and deepen their understanding of Him, while also fostering meaningful connections with peers, parents, the pastor, and the church—preparing them to embrace their lifelong identity as children of God. During these classes, we will explore Luther's Small Catechism in detail, covering the Ten Commandments, the Apostles' Creed, the Lord's Prayer, Baptism, Communion, Confession, and Forgiveness.

WHAT IS CONFIRMATION?

The rite of “Affirmation of Baptism,” or “Confirmation,” is a rite practiced within the Lutheran Church that recognizes the life-long process of Christian education and formation that began in with the sacrament of Holy Baptism.

In the early church, confirmation was connected to Holy Baptism as the catechumen (literally, “those being prepared”) were instructed in the Christian faith and life in preparation for Christian baptism. After this preparation, the believer was baptized on the eve of Easter, the “Easter Vigil.” After the baptism, the catechumens were “confirmed” by the church with holy/chrism oil, prayers, the sign of the cross, and the laying on of hands by the church leaders.

In the present day, the rite of Confirmation is the public affirmation (confirming) of the confirmand’s baptism, his/her belief in the Triune God, and the desire to continue loving and serving Jesus through their lives and in their church.

Likewise, the church both witnesses and affirms this Affirmation of Baptism and promises to support and pray for these young members who will be serving together with the church community, “giving thanks and praise to God and proclaiming the good news to all the world.”
